This week in first grade we encountered more animals as we ventured deeper into the jungle with Elmer while reading chapters 5 & 6 of our book, My Father’s Dragon. The students are having fun predicting which items Elmer will use to help him get past these obstacles in the jungle. Thank you for your support with rereading the chapters each night with your child. Please remember to return My Father’s Dragon each day so your child can use it in class.
In phonics, we have finished our study on vowel teams this week with analyzing and practicing the final diphthong pattern /aw/ spelled au and aw. As a culminating activity, the students will design and create a Vowel Town. This activity is designed to showcase patterns we’ve studied that contain teams of letters which work together to make one sound.
Our writers are hard at work editing and revising their fictional pieces. They’ve added authors’ crafts such as feelings, adjectives, and dialogue to their writing. The students enthusiastically add these details as well as identify them in the texts that they’re reading. They are proud of their writing accomplishments and look forward to showing you their growth as a writer and sharing their published works with you soon.
In math, we have moved on from counting money and we are now learning to make simple change. We practiced this by “shopping” from a vending machine and a school supply store. Students counted their coins to determine if they had enough money to make the purchase, paid the seller, and calculated how much change they should receive in return. We also reviewed place value, fractions, and solving word problems.
