We had a fabulous week in first grade celebrating our 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day. We participated in many fun-filled activities in honor of these holidays throughout the subject areas. Monday F105 went to the Upper Campus to make clay Chilean Moai as a Tapestry project with the 6th grade. The Valentine’s Day Friendship Fruit Salad was a huge hit. It led to a conversation about the varieties of fruit making the salad extra tasty and how the variety of personalities in our classroom make it a great place to be. We also enjoyed a performance by the Palm Beach Opera on Thursday.
Our focus in phonics was a review of ending digraphs -sh, -tch, and -ck. For the hundredth day, the students were challenged to write 100 words using the spelling patterns we’ve learned throughout the year. This week, the students enjoyed writing friendship letters to each other focusing on acts of kindness. The students will continue to have the opportunity to write friendly letters throughout the month of February. The students also had fun editing Valentine sentences and creating sentences out of the messages displayed on conversation hearts.
In math, we used conversation hearts and our 100 items to review non-standard measurement as well as weight, length, and capacity. They students quickly noticed that 100 items looks very different depending on the size of things. We also began our study of geometry and sorted pattern blocks according to various attributes. The students loved helping our Kindergarten buddies to sort, tally, and graph Valentine conversation hearts.
