We had such a great week concluding our apple unit by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday and our culminating activity, Apple Fest! The students got to make apple bread from scratch, make and decorate a caramel apple, as well as compete in an apple tower building challenge. The students learned so much about apples and had a lot of fun in the process.
In language arts, we documented our understanding of John Chapman’s life and character traits through the use of various thinking maps. The students enjoyed predicting what Johnny Appleseed had in his sack and shared what they would pack, if they were him. We also utilized his story to discuss and identify the types of nouns. The students continue to work on identifying beginning blends and the proper spelling of specific weekly “snap” words.
In math, our apple theme continued with the students identifying odd and even amounts of Apple Jacks, and practicing our addition skills using apples. Their number sense is strengthening through our daily review of: sequencing numbers, counting with tallies, skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and determining odd and even numbers.
