We were all a “buzz” in first grade this week as we practiced for our “A Bugz Holiday” performance. We hope you enjoyed the Winter Concert, the students did a great job and had so much fun performing. We concluded this week with two great Mystery Readers and had fun making gingerbread play-doh. Thank you for your help with providing a family recipe. Stay tuned for your copy of the First Grade Holiday Cookbook.
In language arts, our word detectives were looking for words in disguise and were asked to “look closely” for unusual words and for familiar patterns that can be found at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. Detective Chase gave our detectives their final five cases to solve which focused on contractions, vowel teams, compound words, and word endings: s, ed, and ing.
Our first grade writers were also challenged to enhance their writing by referencing a mentor text. The students utilized the informational text, My First Soccer Game, to identify what good writers use to help teach their audience. Our writers enthusiastically noted the importance of having a title that informs, labeled pictures, and warnings for their readers about important known facts. We had a lot fun writing our class how-to story on How To Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. Ask your child which warnings and suggestions are most important in the sandwich-making process.
In math, the students continue to work on improving their math facts fluency through daily computation practice. We also discussed the difference between nonstandard and standard measurement. The students practiced measuring the length and width of objects to the nearest inch.
