This week, first grade went on a field trip to the Four Arts Library where they enjoyed fiction and nonfiction books about nocturnal animals and a bat art project. Another highlight of this week was when F104 ”BATted it out of the park” with their bat themed flag presentation.
Readers learned to increase their stamina for reading by first reading independently and then buddy reading with a partner. We worked on retelling stories in sequence and identifying the main idea. Our phonics instruction focused on identifying the ch (chomp, chip) and -tch (witch, patch) sounds.
Our young writers began studying other writers’ craft to see what special things the authors do that students could try in their own writing. We studied George McClement’s story Night of the Veggie Monster and noticed his use of bolded “Pop Out” words, ellipses, and exact action words. Next week, we will try to incorporate some of these elements in our small moment writing.
In math, we began subtraction and practiced both counting back and counting up to find the difference. We continue to practice learned skills such as collecting data using tally marks, making sums of ten, counting groups of nickels and pennies, and telling time to the hour.
Our first-grade project-based activity this week featured patterns in the night sky. Students created and labeled a Stop Motion movie of the phases of the moon. Next week, students will narrate the animation and share the video with their families on SeeSaw.
