We were so glad to see our students’ smiling faces as we welcomed everyone back this week. We hope you all had a wonderful, restful break. The students came in eager to learn and “build” upon their previously learned skills. Our first graders are excited about their contribution to the upcoming dog show. They had so much fun going to the Upper Campus to make dog biscuits!
“Building” is the current theme in our language arts curriculum. Our students have made the transition from reading words to building words. We introduced vowel teams “ea” and “ee” and students are on the lookout for these patterns in their daily reading. It is great to see the connections they make and their enthusiasm to share their findings.
Our new unit in reading has our readers “building” their understanding of literature through focusing on story elements in fiction. This week we began with taking a closer look at the cover, analyzing the characters and setting, and discussing how we can use the text to make predictions as well as further predict what’s to come. The students have enjoyed conversing with their reading buddies about what they read.
In writing, our students began learning about opinion writing and are taking their roles as “judges” very seriously. Students judged a pretend dog show which tied in perfectly with PBDA’s upcoming pet show. We appreciate your assistance with your child’s collection of objects. We look forward to having them begin to share them next week.
In math, we began our fraction unit by discussing and sorting equal and unequal parts of shapes. We continued learning about 3-D shapes and their attributes as well as symmetry of 2-D shapes. Students also reviewed number sense by adding 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, 1 less, 100 more and 100 less of a number. We continued to work on writing 2 and 3 digit numbers in expanded form, telling time in 15 minute intervals, and counting mixed groups of coins.
