We kicked off this week in first grade with two great presentations. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra retold the story of The Ugly Duckling and the Coral Reef Foundation educated our students on the reef’s anatomy and how they can help protect it. The students used different foods to design a replica of a living coral polyp!
In language arts, our students became “pros” by learning pronouns. The students sorted pronouns found in contractions, and participated in various activities that reinforced this skill. In addition, we continued to review contractions and editing sentences. Our readers have enjoyed searching for contractions and pronouns found within their books to share and compare with their classmates.
In math, we continued our study of shapes. The students compared and sorted 2D and 3D shapes. They created symmetrical designs and identified whether the design had a horizontal or vertical line of symmetry. We also reviewed telling time to the quarter hours, counting combinations of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, and solving number stories.
As we prepare for next week’s Village Day, F104 focused on Brazil’s landforms, mountain ranges, and natural resources. The students enjoyed making a salt map, highlighting these features in 3-D as well as learning about the rock cycle and which types of rocks are most abundant in Brazil. In F105, students explored popular pastimes from Chilean culture. The students made soccer balls; weaved Chilean patriotic stars; created pan flutes from straws, and made portraits of one of Chile’s more surprising residents, penguins!
