We were full of school spirit this week in first grade. The students enjoyed participating in this week’s festivities. We had fun on Thursday, supporting and cheering for our smallest pelicans and flamingos at the Pre Primary and Primary Field Day. We hope you enjoyed our Flag performance. The students did a great job and enjoyed sharing our money song with you and the school. We look forward to closing this week at Field Day tomorrow, we hope to see you there.
In language arts this week, our word builders use various “tools” to help them read and spell words. We reviewed breaking apart larger words and contractions with a hammer as well as using a tape measure to stretch out longer words. Our readers continue to use their toolbox to remind them to look at pictures with (goggles), get their mouths ready (wrench), and remember to ask a neighbor (2-handled saw) for help and guidance when reading with our buddies. The final touches are being added to our informational books as we begin the publishing process. The students have worked really hard adding details, labels, and writer’s craft to their pages.
In math, students reviewed 2-D shapes and their attributes. They counted and compared the number of sides and vertices as well as looked for lines of symmetry. Since futbol/soccer is Brazil’s and Chile’s most popular sport we decided to take a closer look at an actual soccer ball. The students identified both pentagons and hexagons on it and realized that these two 2-D shapes were on a sphere which is a 3-D shape. Each student made a paper plate soccer ball and F104 also made mini clay models.
This week in global studies, the first grade experimented with volcanoes. Since there are more than 2,000 volcanoes in Chile and the oldest extinct volcano is found in Brazil, we thought we’d end this week with a bang! The students looked at the anatomy of a volcano and watched “lava flow”! Afterwards, the students worked together to create and erupt their own mini-volcanoes.
