First grade is full of “life” as we have begun our inquiry on oviparous (egg producing) animals. Our students are enjoying our observation area, where we are watching the life cycle of ladybugs, butterflies, and frogs! The students are also very impressed with the progress our ants make each day in our ant farms.
In language arts, our word builders are hard at work “building” their knowledge of vowel teams. This week we focused on “ai” and “ay” words. Students quickly saw the pattern that “ay” only comes at the end of a word. Our students have become true reading detectives, and are able to quickly identify numerous vowel teams found within the text.
This week’s focus in reading emphasized the importance of taking a closer look at what we’re reading in order to retell the story. The students had the opportunity to analyze their illustrations, and draw a detailed picture explaining the setting of their story. In addition, our voracious readers are doing a great job with their partner conversing about story elements such as the characters, setting, problem, and solution, as well as retelling what they’ve read.
Our writing judges continue to build their understanding of opinion writing through the O.R.E.O. method. This acronym helps the students remember the steps to writing a well detailed review. This week the students wrote their opinion of various subjects and will be sharing their collections over the next few weeks in writing. Thank you for your help, the students were so excited to share and write about these items.
In math this week our focus was digging deeper into our fraction unit. We counted equal parts and determined what fraction was shaded on different shapes. We sorted and categorized pictures of pizzas cut into different fractions. Students demonstrated what they’ve learned by using
Play-Doh to make different shapes and cutting them into equal pieces and identifying the corresponding fraction.
