Our first graders have been hard at work preparing for Grandparents and Special Friends Day. We are excited to meet your families next Thursday at 10 a.m. Spring is alive in our classrooms and the students have enjoyed watching the life cycle of butterflies and ladybugs.
This week our phonics lessons focused on the long o sound and the letter combinations: oa, ow, and oe. We continue to be on the lookout for vowel teams found within our stories and the students were amazed to see how frequently they appear!
In reading, we began our study on character analysis. Our readers had the opportunity to look more closely at characters, describing their traits, and noticing how characters change over the course of a story. We also had a lot of fun taking the perspective of our characters as we changed our voices to match the characters in our stories.
Our writers were very serious this week as they judged collections and shared their opinions on which was the best and why. The students thoughtfully explained their decisions with reasons and evidence. Please ask your child which collection they felt was best and why.
In math, we worked on labeling and identifying fractions through multiple hands-on activities and applications. The students also identified the fractional part of various groups. We continue to practice telling time, determining place value, and increasing our math fact fluency. Students are also working on writing number sentences that solve word problems.
