This week in first grade, our global citizens enjoyed listening to the story of The Great Kapok Tree at the Royal Poinciana Chapel. We had a beautiful picnic lunch underneath the Kapok Tree. Being in its presence helped our students empathize with the tree and its importance to the rainforest and the animals. Not only did we enjoy getting out into nature this week, but we also introduced a new technology. Each student used Green Screen to edit his/her own photo to create a special Valentine's present for you.
In phonics, the students analyzed “glued/welded” words, which are chunked ending patterns: -ing, -ang, -ung, -ong, -ink, -ank, -unk, & -onk. The students enjoyed playing various interactive games on the SMART board, as well as participating in workshop activities to reinforce this spelling pattern.
We have wrapped up our nonfiction reading unit. Our reading experts concluded the unit by studying books like a writer, thinking about key words, and using drama to bring the topic to life! Our readers have truly impressed us with the plethora of knowledge that they have learned about various topics of interest, the vocabulary they have acquired, and their overall growth and fluency as readers.
Our writers are hard at work composing their informational books about their country’s animals. This week, the students wrote about their animals’ diets and added details to their illustrations. The students look forward to reading their books to you on Village Day. You will be impressed when you see all of the hard work that has gone into these books.
In math, we continued our number sense practice with writing numbers in different forms: standard form, expanded form, number words, and drawing base ten blocks. We reviewed adding 3 addends together, finding a missing addend, and adding/subtracting ten from a number. We also completed our study on measurement by reviewing weight, capacity, length, and temperature.
