Our first graders are enjoying reading Elmer Elevator’s many adventures in our novel study of My Father’s Dragon. This week, we had fun recreating chapter three inside the Norton Sculpture Gardens. The gardens provided a tranquil realistic setting and were the perfect backdrop for reading Chapter 4. Students enjoyed eating a tangerine and taking the perspective of Elmer.
In phonics, our word builders are continuing to learn more about vowel teams and diphthongs as we analyze the sounds of /oo/ spelled ue and ew. The students love sharing and identifying all the vowel teams we have previously learned and are currently studying. We look forward to showcasing and utilizing all these spelling patterns in our upcoming culminating activity, “Vowel Town” which you will be able to see during your parent conferences.
In math, we reviewed writing fractional parts of a group and determined the probability of winning or losing different games. Then the students used their knowledge of probability to design their own board games. The students took great pride in their designs and are so excited to watch their peers play their games.
Our writers are hard at work composing fictional story books. They are having so much fun creating problems and solutions for their characters, and impress us daily with their use of author’s craft and creativity! They are so proud of their writing and we encourage you to ask them questions about their stories.
