This week of First Grade has been full of excitement at PBDA! Earth Day kicked off our week which included our field trip to the Four Arts Garden Show and garden tour. Thank you for the tour Mrs. Lazzara! First Grade 105 also participated in Fearless Friday with Chef Linda Tate and enjoyed basil hummus created from our own PBDA Garden. We concluded the week with our school-wide event honoring the forgotten soldiers. Our first graders enjoyed working with the sixth graders as they composed letters and colored pictures for the soldiers.
In phonics, our word builders have moved into studying diphthongs, two letters that combined make a different sound. This week we focused on the sound made by “ou” and “ow”. The students continued to impress us with their quickness to spell, identify, and create sentences using the words. The skills the students have learned throughout the year greatly assisted them in publishing their favorite piece of opinion writing. The students took great pride sharing their writing with one another as we gathered together to celebrate their accomplishments.
Our readers are enjoying our study on characters and are doing a great job using adjectives to describe the characters in their stories. Next week, we look forward to starting a new unit of study based on the book My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett.
In math, the students learned about probability. They sorted events into likely, unlikely, impossible, and certain. The students used their knowledge of fractions to demonstrate the odds of picking out a certain color gumball from their machine. We are continuing to work on our fact fluency and using various strategies to complete word problems.
